SA universities keep top rankings in QS World University Rankings

The QS World University Rankings have smiled fondly upon a number of the respected universities in South Africa. Currently, the highest international ranking position (200th) has been claimed by the University of Cape Town. The University of the Witwatersrand ranks next at 381st, followed by Stellenbosch University at 405th. Other local universities to make the cut (included within the world top 800) include the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Cape Town have also both received notable QS World University Rankings by subject.

The QS analyses information for well over 1 000 institutions across 48 subjects, all of which are grouped into five broad areas, in an effort to rank universities according to the quality level of education provided. The information is collected from four distinct sources, including two global surveys of employers and academics, as well as research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject (both drawn from Elsevier’s Scopus database).

Below, we highlight a few subjects that really stood out in South Africa.

The University of the Witwatersrand

The QS World University Rankings provided the University of the Witwatersrand with the following impressive rankings by subject for 2020:

  • Anthropology (within the top 100)
  • Archaeology (within the top 100)
  • Development Studies (within the top 20)
  • Engineering – Mineral & Mining (within the top 20)
  • Geography (within the top 150)
  • Earth and Marine Sciences (within the top 150)
  • English Language and Literature (within the top 150)
  • Medicine (within the top 200)

The University of Cape Town

The University of Cape Town boasts seven subjects within the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings. Its Development Studies subject holds a top 10 spot, in fact, coming in at number 10, a single value drop from the previous year.
The University’s other top 100 ranked subjects include:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Anthropology
  • Archaeology
  • Architecture/Built Environment
  • Geography
  • Medicine

Rankings by Faculty

The QS World University Rankings have also provided the various universities in South Africa with rankings according to their different faculties. The faculty with the highest rankings for the University of the Witwatersrand is Arts & Humanities, while the University of Cape Town boasts the highest ranking in Life Sciences & Medicine.

The bottom line

Despite the challenging times with which our country has been faced over the past few years, as well as in recent times, our universities continue to serve up a truly world-class education to students and a host of quality courses. Combined with hard work and dedication, these incredible universities are playing a significant role in terms of moulding the youth of South Africa and empowering them to do great things.
