Fun Fitness

We all know that exercise is good for us for so many reasons. It keeps us fit and healthy, gets us breathing deeply, reduces stress, helps us sleep and produces those all-important endorphins, the “feel good” hormone that regular exercisers rave about.

Some people love the gym and the opportunity to watch people watching themselves in the floor to ceiling mirrors. If that doesn’t float your boat though, there are some great alternatives to consider:

Pole dancing

No, this isn’t only for the ladies. Get sexy and fit at the same time because nothing develops those core muscles like clinging to a pole! It helps with weight loss, tones your arms, legs, backside and stomach, and also increases your general confidence. There are several pole dancing studios in Joburg, including BodyMind Studios, which has a few venues across town.

If you loved trampolines as a child, the Bounce craze will get you super-excited. Get your own trampoline or visit the new Bounce gym in Joburg. Starting with a bounce, you can slam dunk a ball, run up a wall or jump into a cushioned bag; or you could choose to do a more structured Bounce Fit class.

Not only for the guys. Boxing is an excellent way to get fit and strong, plus it creates an amazing feeling of power and is fantastic for stress release. There are quite a few options here: join a class at a gym or martial arts studio, get a private coach or practice yourself on a punch bag (get a few tips from a professional first though or you could hurt yourself).

As you move your booty to the beat, you’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realise you’re exercising! Classes are made up of a mix of dances like salsa, tango, flamenco and jive and you don’t need a partner as you dance on your own. There’s also no need to worry about having two left feet, as everyone is so focussed on following the instructor that no-one has time to look at anyone else. Find a Zumba class at your local gym or a private dance studio in your area.

With all these options out there, there’s no reason not to move your body. There’s also no better time than today, so get going now!
