Now that South Africa has moved to lockdown level 1, and (social distancing, sanitisation, and face masks aside) we’re pretty much free to go back to ‘normal’ life, you can start thinking about dating again! You still need to be careful and aware of Covid-19 though… so here are our best first date spots in Jozi where you can have some fun AND keep yourself (and your date) healthy and safe!
1. The Fourways Farmers Market
Spending time in the fresh air? Yes please! Plus a daytime date can be oodles of fun. The Fourways Farmers Market has recently moved to Modderfontein. The market is held every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.
2. Nice on 4th
Another spot that’s perfect for a daytime date is Nice on 4th in Parkhurst. The restaurant has great atmosphere, is fully equipped for COVID-19, and is renowned for scrumptious breakfasts and lazy lunches.
3. A picnic at Emmarentia Dam
Pack a basket of delicious snacks, escape the hustle of Joburg, and drive out to Emmarentia Dam for a romantic picnic. The dam is not so isolated that you will feel unsafe, but there is enough space for privacy and to enjoy each other’s company without worrying too much about social distancing.
4. Explore your creative skills at Paint Nite
Paint Nite is organised by Yaymaker, and now that we’re on level 1, this really unique dinner date and painting event is on again! The first post-COVID Paint Nite will be held at Milk Bar in September, but follow Yaymaker on Facebook for info on future events at different venues.
5. Have a special first date at home!
If you’re still a bit worried about COVID, or if you’re just on a budget, there’s nothing wrong with planning a fun first date at your own house. Cook a special meal (or order in your favourite) and create atmosphere with candles and soft lights. If you’re nervous, an activity such as a board game that you both enjoy can break the ice. Or lay a blanket on the grass for some romantic star gazing!
Dating during a pandemic doesn’t need to be scary or overwhelming. There are many restaurants that are open again and are fully compliant with all lockdown regulations. There’s also nothing wrong with staying in and creating some romance at home. Avoid overly crowded bars and clubs where social distancing is nearly impossible and people may not be wearing masks. Above all – stay safe and enjoy yourself!
