What is it about summertime that makes us want to get healthy? Perhaps it’s the fact that we’re forced to look at ourselves in fewer clothes or even an unforgiving swimsuit, leading us to regret the extra portions of winter-warmer meals we gobbled up a few months back? Either way, there’s no better time to make some beneficial lifestyle changes! Here are five simple ways to be healthier this summer.
Did you know that South Africa has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world? There are over 20 000 reported cases every year! Don’t think for a second that you are immune just because you have an olive-based or darker skin. Make applying sunscreen (a minimum of SPF20 and a maximum of SPF50) a part of your regular daily routine and, for good measure, try to stay out of direct sunlight between 10am and 3pm.
Smoothies are still popular and quite filling, too. However, if you’re just looking to boost your nutrition and kick-start your immune system, juicing is the way to go. Strapped for cash? No worries. You can get a decent juicer for around R500.
Even if you aren’t 100% happy with how you look (who is?), make an effort to start focusing on the things that you do love about yourself. Stand in front of the mirror every day and pay yourself a genuine compliment out loud. You’ll be amazed at just how much self-love can do for your self-esteem.
Swimming is the perfect way to cool down and get some endorphin-releasing exercise in. Did you know that a 30-minute session can burn up to 400 calories?
#StudentLife is rarely easy. If you’re not grafting at your desk in your student digz trying to prepare for the next exam, you’re putting in an extra shift at your part-time job. You deserve a bit of pampering from time to time. Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a long bubble bath or a manicure, and be sure to soak up every second with a big smile on your face. It will work wonders for your motivation and morale.
