Saving Money as a Student on Car Costs

By April 12, 2017 No Comments

From sky-high petrol prices to monthly motor insurance premiums, it goes without saying that owning your very own ride, and driving in general, can take a massive toll on your student budget! Luckily, Student Digz has some awesome tips to share with you for saving money on car costs…

Ride Sharing

Are some of your mates not as lucky as you are to be able to buy their own set of wheels? Well, the good news is that you can help them out and earn some extra moolah in the process. Ride sharing means picking your pals up and driving to campus together… and everyone who catches a lift with you pays a monthly or weekly fee that you can put towards paying for petrol (or anything else that you may need, for that matter).

Become an Uber Driver

Have some spare time on your hands? Why not consider becoming an Uber driver? If you and your vehicle meet all of the necessary requirements, it is actually really easy and a great way in which to make some extra cash.

The current requirements for all prospective South African Uber drivers are as follows:

  • You must have a valid South African Professional driving permit (PrDP)
  • You will need to complete a safety screening
  • You will need to pass a driving evaluation
  • Your vehicle must have a functional radio and good quality air conditioning.
  • Your vehicle must have 4 doors.
  • Your vehicle model must be 2013 or newer.
  • Your vehicle must NOT be a hatchback.

If you meet all of these requirements, you can sign up online, submit all of the required documents… and pretty much hit the road from there!

Sell Your Car

Did you know that using an Uber to get to varsity every day (as long as your digz aren’t too far away) will cost you much less in the long run than owning a car? Knowing this, and depending on the circumstances, selling your car might make more financial sense at this point. Check out our ‘To Uber or To Own: That is the Question’ blog for more information.
