There are numerous bars, restaurants, markets and nightclubs in this part of the city, and with Jozi’s Nightbus set to launch any day now, you can travel easily and safely between UJ, Wits or Braamfontein and Sandton, Illovo, Rosebank, and Melville.

Check out our round-up of some of the hottest spots to get you in the mood for a night out in South Africa’s biggest, most vibrant city:

Cool Running’s
This laid-back Jamaican chain has three venues in Joburg. Drink cocktails, shooters or good old beer at their Caribbean beach bar while listening to an eclectic range of music (hint: it’s not just reggae).

The Blues Room
Even if jazz isn’t your thing, you can’t beat a night out with the artsy crowd at The Blues Room in Sandton. Inspired by the New Orleans music scene, you can rub shoulders with some of the hippest jazz cats and soak up some culture.

FashionTV Dining Lounge
Another theme chain with five branches around Gauteng, this is the place to be seen, and to watch the beautiful people.

Bassline
Just next door in Newtown you’ll find the likes of Freshly Ground, Skwatta Kamp, Karen Zoid and Abdullah Ibrahim, among others. Bassline is a favourite of live music lovers across genres, so check out their line-up to see when your favourite SA artist is playing.

Katzy’s at the Grillhouse
If you’re keen on indulging in a bit of people-watching, Katzy’s is the place for it. Sit back and relax in one of their great leather armchairs and watch all the glamorous people walk by.

Kitcheners
This is a pub restaurant with reasonable food that’s also to die for. Right in your hood in Braamfontein, it’s the place to go when you have the post-bar munchies.

Go Go Bar
A fun, vibrant lounge bar with delicious food to boot. Situated in the heart of trendy Newtown, you won’t be disappointed by an evening at the Go Go Bar.
