Career Counselling Programmes for University Students

Career counselling is a vital aspect of any university student’s life. Such coaching will help a student to discover what they really want to do and how to go about achieving that goal. If your child has just left for university or is heading in that direction, you will need to help them decide which courses would be best for them based on their skills, strengths and of course passions. Investigating the various courses available at their chosen universities is a great way to ensure that your child is able to make an informed decision about their career and future.

There is no denying that your child will learn a great deal about him or herself while living with other students and being exposed to the real world. If your child is staying away from home then it is advised that you choose suitable student accommodation that will provide access to a safe yet diverse environment where they can learn, that also provides access to social workers and counsellors as needed.

Two popular universities: the University of Johannesburg and Wits University, make provisions for students to have easy access to career counselling, and this seems to be a system that works. For instance, the University of Johannesburg has a Career Services Department where psychologists and consultants can guide students towards making better career and future based decisions. The counsellors here can also help your child to learn how to create a CV, how to job hunt and also how to conduct themselves in an interview.

At Wits University there is a Counselling and Careers Development Unit (CCDU) where students can attend personal development workshops, undergo psychometric career assessments and obtain general guidance when it comes to following certain career paths. This department also offers a graduate recruitment programme which is known for its success when registered recruiters are looking for graduates to fill positions in certain careers.

Regardless of whether your child attends one of these universities or another, he or she is going to need to have some guidance along the way – career counselling is a great way to get them on the right path. As a parent, your job is to provide a safe and suitable environment for them to spread their wings and become all that they were destined to be.
